Tattoo Aftercare Guide
Now that you’ve got your fresh piece of art, let’s make sure it heals perfectly!
Your tattoo is essentially an open wound, so following proper aftercare is crucial to prevent infections and ensure the best results.
Immediately After Your Tattoo
Your tattoo will be wrapped in either cling wrap or a second-skin medical bandage. Your artist will provide specific instructions, but here’s a general guide:
🩹 If wrapped in cling wrap:
-
Remove it as soon as you get home.
-
Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap.
-
Avoid applying cream for the first 1-3 days to allow the tattoo to dry naturally.
🩹 If wrapped in second-skin (Saniderm, Dermalize, etc.):
-
Keep it on for 2-5 days (as long as it stays intact).
-
After 5 days, remove it in the shower under warm water, peeling from the edges inward.
-
It’s normal for ink and bodily fluids to collect under the bandage—do not pop it!
2 - 5 Days After Your Tattoo
-
Let your tattoo dry out—use little to no moisturizer at this stage.
-
If the dryness feels uncomfortable, apply a tiny amount of fragrance-free cream (Hustle Butter, Pawpaw, etc.).
-
Wash your tattoo once per day with unscented antibacterial soap. (I personally love the foamy one)
-
Pat dry with a clean towel—do not rub or pick at scabs!
1 - 2 Weeks After Your Tattoo
To ensure smooth healing, follow these golden rules:
🚫 No soaking (avoid baths, pools, hot tubs, or the ocean).
🚫 No over-moisturizing (dry is better than too much lotion).
🚫 No direct sun exposure (UV rays can fade and damage your fresh tattoo).
🚫 No picking or scratching (this can cause scarring and ink loss).
✅ If itching becomes unbearable, salt sprays can help provide relief.
How Long Does It Take to Heal?
Most tattoos fully heal in 2 - 4 weeks, depending on your skin and how well you follow aftercare. Why is my tattoo scabby? Scabbing is completely normal and part of the healing process! It might look rough, but it’s a sign that your skin is recovering.
